Step 1: Make a Claim With Your Own Insurance Company

After an accident, many people wait for the other driver’s insurance company. That can be a mistake.

If your vehicle may be a total loss, you should make a claim with your own insurance company. Your appraisal rights come from your own policy, not the other driver’s insurance policy.

Step 2: Take Photos

If you are able, take pictures of your vehicle before it is towed away.

Photos can help document the vehicle’s condition, accident damage, and help protect you if questions come up later about previous damage, cleanliness, or condition.

Step 3: Do Not Rush to Settle

Insurance companies may pressure you to accept the first offer quickly. Before you agree, ask yourself one simple question:

Can I replace my vehicle for the amount they are offering?

If the answer is no, call Car Counselors.

Step 4: Review the Insurance Valuation

The insurance company should provide a valuation report. Send that report to Car Counselors along with vehicle details and photos.

We will review the information and help determine whether the offer appears fair.

Step 5: Invoke Your Appraisal Rights

If your policy includes an appraisal clause, you may be able to formally dispute the value and hire an independent appraiser.

Car Counselors can guide you through that process.
